Almeria is the capital of the province of Almeria. Situated in the southeast corner of Spain, it’s an area that basks in the sun’s rays for an average of 320 days a year. It’s a lively and modern city on the Mediterranean Sea that also boasts a rich and varied history. Over the centuries many civilizations, such as the Romans, Phoenicians, Moors and Carthaginians have called this place home.
Dominating the city is the Alcazaba, the largest castle the Moors built in Andalucía.
Take an early evening stroll through La Rambla, a long and popular tree-lined avenue full of cafes, squares and children’s play areas.
A good time to go to Almeria is in August, during the annual music and arts festival, where many of the concerts and dance events are free.
There’s a busy nightlife, particularly in the summer. Most of it can be found on the beach resorts to the west of the city, but the bars in the streets near the cathedral are buzzing to the early hours of the morning.
Almeria is still an important ferry and fishing port.
