Zaragoza

Located approximately 250 kilometres to the north-east of Madrid, Zaragoza is the capital city of Aragon the autonomous region. Known for its picturesque avenues and unspoiled beauty, Zaragoza remains very much an underestimated tourist destination, offering a great opportunity to enjoy the real Spain without the hordes of tourists.

Those who actually make it to Zaragoza are unlikely to be disappointed. Here you will find a great choice of authentic local restaurants and some of the best cooking in Spain. The city is certainly not short of historical attractions either. You can enjoy an extensive old town and wander around the Aljaferia castle, the largest and most impressive Moorish building beyond Adalucia. There is also the Theatre of Caesaraugusta and the Roman Forum as well as the famous sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, the Basilica del Pilar. Zaragoza also has its fair share of magnificent palaces and cathedrals, the La Seo cathedral being one of the most popular and well-known sites.

Zaragoza also has plenty of museums, one of the most famous being the Museum of Fine Arts. Here you can find all sorts of famous masterpieces from early artists from the old Kingdom of Aragon as well as pieces by El Greco, Goya and Ribera.
