Vitoria

Vitoria is the capital city of the Basque Country in Spain, even though it is actually the second larger city after Bilbao in the region and significantly less famous. The city has a population of around 235 thousand.

The old part of the city is located on an elevated area of land and is particularly well preserved, containing some remarkable monuments including fifteenth century hours and an impressive Gothic cathedral, Santa Maria, which was constructed in the fourteenth century. In the old area of the city, you can also find the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Natural Sciences.

The Cathedral of Mary Immaculate is also a must-see feature of Vitoria. A High Gothic construction, it boasts a temple-like style and some magnificent architectural features. There are many other religious buildings worth a visit as well, such as the late Gothic church of San Vicente Martir and the Basilica of San Prudencio.

The city also hosts two yearly music festivals and a number of other local festivities. Part of the University of Basque Country is also located in the city, focussing on the liberal arts. There is also a fine arts museum that makes for a deservingly popular attraction.
