Salou

Spain hotels

Salou is a popular holiday destination located on Spain’s Costa Dorada, (Gold Coast). Although there are many resorts along this stretch of coastline, Salou claims to be the tourist capital of the area because of its range of attractions.

The main attraction for most visitors is, of course, the numerous fine sandy beaches and the hot, sunny climate that allows you to make the most of the area. There are two main beaches in Salou, the Ponent and the Llevant. Both of them have lifeguard facilities and cafes, and in addition the Llevant has a gym, children’s play areas and volleyball courts. There are grassy areas behind the beach which is popular for picnics. Llevant has also been awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and facilities.

Salou is also known as the location of the Port Aventura Theme Park. This park has four zones representing China, Mexico, Western USA and the Mediterranean. Within each area the shops and amusements are themed according to the country. There are rides and entertainment to suit all ages; it is said to have the fastest roller coaster in Europe.

For the more active holidaymakers Salou offers the Costa Caribe Water Park. This is a complex of rides and chutes of different types and for all ages so that the whole family can join in the fun. The park has a range of eating places.

To make a change from the hectic activities of the theme parks and the beach the Avenida Jaume I offers the chance to relax and enjoy a quiet stroll, taking in the architecture and scenery of the town. The promenade is lined with shops and pavement cafes. The fountains at one end are illuminated at night.

Another place to visit if the weather is unpleasant is the Church of Santa María del Mar. This building dates back to 1766 and has a walled belfry with a single bell.
