Jerez de la Frontera

Spain hotels

Jerez de la Frontera is situated in the region of Andalusia in south west Spain. The town has a long history of strife as it was situated strategically on the border between Moorish Spain and the Christians, hence the “de la Frontera” in its name, which means “on the frontier” in English.

The other half of the name, Jerez, has now become synonymous in English with the name of the fortified wine, Sherry, which originated from the area. Jerez is also well-known for the production of many other wines. Tours of some of the sherry bodegas, or wineries, are available, where visitors can learn about sherry production and taste some of the produce.

Jerez de la Frontera is home to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, where horse riding performances take place every Thursday during the summer months. Visitors can also take a tour of 60 stables and the tack room, which houses harnesses and saddles dating back to the 18th century.
Another event that will please the horse lover is the annual Horse Fair which takes place at the beginning of May. This event is world renowned, holding many shows and competitions.

Jerez de la Frontera is also famous for music, particularly flamenco. Enthusiasts can view a large collection of instruments and attend audio visual presentations on flamenco at the Museo de Arte Flamenco. As well as the museum Jerez hosts a Flamenco Festival which has become one of the best known in the world.

Apart from shows, visitors can also take part in dance courses to try their skills.
Shopping for souvenirs is well catered for. Traditional products include wicker work, items related to wine or flamenco and leather products of all types.

For those who like their excitement to be noisy and fast Jerez is home to the Circuito de Jerez, where world championship motor sport events are held.
