Gata De Gorgos, Costa Blanca


Gata de Gorgos is a small village, population 5,325, in the Marina Alta region of the north Costa Blanca in Spain. The village is famous for its wicker industry and for having an unusually large number of bars and restaurants per head of population. Boasting over 30 bars, the most popular are Ca Corder, which is located in the church square, and Ca Patrics, which is located in the Placa Nuevo.

For those who enjoy warmth and sunshine then Gata de Gorgos will suit as it has an average of over 300 days of sunshine each year, with low rainfall. The summers are hot and the winters mild.

As mentioned Gata de Gorgos is well-known for the handcrafted tradition of palm and cane baskets. This traditional craft has existed for centuries, along with the production of furniture and other craft objects. In some shops it is possible to see the local craftsmen at work. At the end of September the fiesta of San Miguel takes over the municipality. This is a large fair/market with dozens of stands selling handicrafts. There is also a tradition for the manufacture of guitars and ceramics.
The village celebrates 3 other important fiestas. These are the Bonfires of San Juan in June, the fiesta in honour of The Christ of the Calvary in August and the St Michael’s celebrations in September.

For those who like to sample the local food the traditional dishes on offer include specialities like the puchero or the special Easter stews. Rice is one of the fundamental ingredients in the cuisine of Gata de Gorgos, in specialities that range from Arroz al horno (rice in the oven), arròs amb costra or amb fesols i naps.

Gata de Gorgos is also the home of the Moscatel grapes. After harvesting the grapes receive the traditional treatment which turns them into the famous raisins of the same name.

Location - Gata de Gorgos is located in the northern Costa Blanca, Spain in the region of Valencia and is situated on the N332 coastal road just inland of Denia and Javea. It can be reached from junctions 62 and 63 of the AP-7 motorway.
