Castellón de la Plana is located in the region of Valencia. It is situated on the shores of the Mediterranean along the Costa del Azahar. The first recorded building on the site of the city was the castle named Fadrell, which was built by the Moors. The city that occupies the present day site came into being in the 13th century, when James I finally conquered the Moorish stranglehold on the area..
In the old town, centred on the Plaza Mayor, is where the majority of the historical sights of Castellón de la Plana are located. One of the main buildings is the Cathedral of Castellon. This began life as a Gothic church towards the end of the 13th century. It was extensively rebuilt in the 15th century only to be demolished during the fighting of the Spanish civil war and was again rebuilt after the war ended in1939. An interesting feature of the cathedral is El Fadri which is a Bell Tower dating from the 16th century and which is around 60 metres high.
The climate of Castellón de la Plana is typical of this part of Spain, hot, dry summers and warm winters and it is a popular tourist resort because of this. The main beach of Castellón de la Plana is the De la Torre Beach which is shingle rather than sand.
Castellón de la Plana is not as crowded as some of the larger resorts in the area but there is still a lively atmosphere in the evening. The Plaza de Santa Clara is surrounded by bars and restaurants that stay open late. Castellón de la Plana also has a casino, the Gran Casino, which offers all the usual facilities.
