Badalona

A city in Catalonia, Badalona has been around since the Roman times. It is located on the left bank of a small river off the Mediterranean Sea. The city is well worth a visit for those interested in exploring Catalan culture, and it has also won the nomination for the 2010 capital for Catalan Culture.

Only ten minutes away from Barcelona, Badalona is a small city of around 220 thousand inhabitants and is one of the oldest towns in the region. It enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate and serves as a great place for a beach holiday with its six kilometres of palm-tree lined beaches. Here you can also find plenty of opportunities for windsurfing and other water sports.

Badalona has a very well preserved artistic and historical heritage. A good example of this is the nineteenth century theatre, Zorilla. May is a great month to go to the city if you are looking to enjoy some lively local festivities. The city also has a significant sports scene, and is especially known for its basketball.

Badalona is also home to the beautiful San Jerónimo de la Murta monastery and various other religious buildings. The ancient relics from Roman times such as the ancient Roman hot springs are also worth a visit.
