A Coruna

Spain hotels

A Coruña, known as La Coruña in Spanish, is the second largest city in Galicia and its capital between 1563 and 1982. The town is a busy port located on the entrance of the estuary in a gulf off the Atlantic Ocean. While the town has plenty of industry and a very important shipping port, it also has a very picturesque historic centre and a lively atmosphere with an abundance of entertainment options and cultural attractions. The town enjoys a temperate maritime climate with warm summers and cool winters but rarely freezing.

The area has been settled since prehistoric times and in more recent times it has served as a significant centre of Galician culture. Here you can find ruins dating back from as far as the Celtic times as well as Roman relics dating back from the second century BC.

Tourism in A Coruña has grown considerably in recent times, thanks to its pleasant beaches and great summer climate. It is also a popular stop off for cruise ships. A visit to the Castle of San Antón which was constructed in the sixteenth century is also well worth a visit. Perhaps most impressive however, is the Roman Tower of Hercules, a lighthouse that has been in operation for almost two-thousand years. In addition, the town has a unique architecture, characterized by its windowed balconies.
